Welcome!
Dear Reader,
My name is Angela Eckerle (previously Gillett). I have been a Mathematics teacher at Lakeland High School in White Lake, MI for seven years and previously taught at Lakeshore High School in Stevensville, MI. I completed my undergraduate degree at Michigan State University with a Major in Mathematics and a Minor in Psychology. After completing my degree at MSU I completed a year long internship at Holt High School. Michigan State has helped me grow into the teacher that I am today, which is why I returned in the Summer of 2016 to complete an online Masters program in Teaching and Curriculum. I hope the contents of my portfolio will show the knowledge that I have gained and how I have been able to apply this education in my classroom.
Lakeland High School is a part of the Huron Valley School District which hold three high schools, three middle schools, and nine elementary schools. The high school has 9th-12th grades with some 8th grade students attending for higher-level classes that the middle school does not offer. Within the student population 9% are minorities and 22% are economically disadvantaged students. Overall the school has roughly 1,400 students and over 100 staff members, 87 of which are teachers. The school is departmentalized by different subject matters, with some teachers within multiple departments due to multiple certifications. General class settings are 35 students per teacher, with special education classes at 17 students per teacher and teacher aide.
While at Lakeland High School I have had the privilege of teaching Algebra 1, Cotaught Algebra 1, Geometry and Honors Pre-Calculus. Even though the Algebra classes hold different titles I still teach the classes with the same content, but knowing that particular students may need different materials based on their curriculum program. Throughout the day I teach 163 students, making each class size very full. My district has created their own units to teach in math while we are trying to decide on what curriculum will best suit our student body. As the state has adopted Common Core, most test books have not provided the teacher the support necessary to uphold these standards. My district is very supportive of the individuality of it's teachers, which I appreciate as I help my student explore math with a hands on approach. I am excited to use my education in teaching and curriculum to continue to develop content for my students to help them obtain a deeper understanding of math.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Angela Eckerle
